When a business- critical application stops functioning properly, organizations turn to the information technology (IT) department for a solution. Detecting, diagnosing and resolving network performance issues along with identifying bandwidth hogs in order to see where the most bandwidth is being utilized are all just part of the job for IT professionals these days. It is safe to assume therefore, anything which can be connected to the network most likely will be.
Why are increased network connections an issue for those inside an organization? Simply put, more to monitor. Being able to look at errors including, but not limited to internet protocols (IP), transmission control protocols (TCP), internet control message protocols (ICMP) and user datagram protocols (UDP) are imperative for an efficiently run organization. Therefore there are three major reasons network traffic must be proactively monitored inside an organization:
1) The cloud means remote applications and distributed locations**: The errors listed above can come from any location an organization is utilizing including network performance indicators – capacity, utilization, data loss, jitter, route analysis and Quality of Service (QoS) configuration – across all network paths that deliver your key applications and services.**
2) Ensuring performance levels are met: all internet connections are NOT created equally. If there is an organization which is utilizing a cloud-based services company in a different state, the connection will be quick and instantaneous.* A different organization may be based in a global office, accessing information in a domestic environment. While the connection may be slower, there are certain commitment levels required to be met from the provider. The easiest way to ensure this is therefore, to monitor the service level agreements (SLA)’s of the bandwidth.
3) Ensuring web performance means staying ahead of competition. By monitoring the performance of an organization’s websites, the hard work that goes into developing and maintaining these sites will be more readily accessible to those who are searching. What does this mean for the organization? Faster response times and a quicker return on information for those clients, researchers, potential clients, etc.
There three reasons are just the tip of the iceberg. The resources on a network have become indispensable for business productivity. Today the IT professional is tasked with monitoring the performance and availability of those resources to provide expected service levels and be ready to handle change.
